Day 59: heading home

Well, it's been a whirlwind trip. 12 countries (if you count the hour
we were in Belgium). Loved them all and learned a lot about each.

The mullet is alive and well in Spain, only there it is dreadlocked.

We had gelado in every country. The best was from an Italian immigrant
named Santini in Cascais Portugal.

Iceland isn't as cold as they would have you believe.

Denmark was still the most civilized country we explorered.

Guinness does taste just a little bit better in Ireland.

Morocco was a feast for the senses.

Scotland seems to be hardest for us to sum up. It was wet. The
mountains were stunning. The scotch was delicious. The pilgramages to
Skye and Grantown were profound.

We have a 18 hour layover in Dublin. What are you gonna do with 18
hours in Dublin? Pub Crawl.

We got a b&b near the airport called Pairc na Bhfuiseog and just
wandered the streets of Dublin looking for Guinness. Found a few
lovely, classic looking Irish pubs and what pub crawl would be
complete without a stop at The Comet.

Day 57: back in Lisbon

Didn't do much at all today. Got up early enjoyed a last day in
Peniche. Headed south a bit melancholy that this our last in Portugal.

We checked into a fancy hotel to just hole up til tomorrow when we hop
a plane starting our trip back to CA. We did still manage to have a
great day driving down the coast, having gelado and capping it off
with movies on the hotel and Poetuguese vinho.

So, we really don't have a pic for today.

This one was taken in the town of Obidos. Another town that doesn't
allow cars as it is surrounded by fortified walls. This is the castle
at one end that has been converted into a state run pensão (b&b).

Things about Morocco

Personal space - Moroccan personal space is a lot closer with one
another than ours. Shaking hands with strangers just to say hello.
Hugging and holding hands with friends is common. When two strangers
are in a heated argument (as in a traffic accident) laying hands on
the other person is not the immediate precursor to a physical fight.
Hands wave and point inches in front eachothers faces throught entire
conversations.

Alibaba - I don't really know the story, but apparently being referred
to as Ali Baba is a compliment. Half the vendors try to butter me up
and lure me in calling me this.

Vendors - few vendors employ good business practices ("come in, browse
around. Like what you see? Tell your friends"). Most use heavy handed
tactics (setting outrageous prices, overcharging tourists, changing
the price, grabbing you and dragging you into their store)

Mopeds - the alleys that lead everywhere are no more than 15 feet wide
and the sides are crowded with street vendors. Still mopeds slalom
between pedestrians at frightning speeds.

Henna ladies - always seems to be fighting with one another. Yelling,
arms flailing, throwing stools around.

Ramadan - influences every aspect here at this time of year. The Souks
absolutely empty for 20 minutes in the evening for prayer and eating.
Certain restaurants only serve drinks during prayer time, and almost
noone serves alchohol.

Mint tea - very common. In most cases overly sweet. Always poured in
an elaborate fashion by raising the spouted teapot a foot above the
glass.

Water on the street - most alleys will have filthy water pooled in the
center at some point. It's probably not pee. Throughout the day
vendors will wash down the area infront of their store to keep the
dust down.

Being neighborly - being cynical, we assume that everyone that offers
you assistance is out to sell you something. Every place in the world
is the same: there are nice people and there are villans in every part
of the world. Sometimes people who offer assistance are just nice
people.

Souks - they sell everything under the sun and will use every tactic
to get you to come in. Streets are insanely crowded, but interestingly
we never felt anything close to threatened.

You get used to the constant flies landing on your ankles when you
stop moving.

Sleeper train to Marrakech is comfy and little exotic.

Labess (pardon my spelling) is how you toast in Arabic.

Nuther day of just wandering the streets of Lisbon cafe hopping. Bought some really nice Dão, Quinta de São Simão da Aguieira, at a great liquor/olive oil shop.

life when he prevented the defending Moors from shutting the gate

As luck would have it, our first full day in Lisbon was on National
Mobility Day. Doesn't really mean that much to us either, except that
the metro is free all day!!! Woot!! So we made full use of it making
our way to various sections of town and checking out some of the
neighborhoods, doing some shopping, eating and drinking.

So far we both really love Lisbon. Seems so modern and clean and
refined and easy to get around. Everything seems to have just slowed
down. We think the slower pace has something to do with lack of
scooters or mopeds buzzing around you. They like their cable cars
too. This shot kinda reminded me of San Francisco.

taxi to the Marrakesh airport, flight to Madrid, 7 hour layover,
nuther flight to Lisbon, taxi to hotel took up pretty much our whole
day.

Day 49: The Man Who Ate Too Much

We have been great stunblers this trip in every country we seems to
stumble across a little gem that we hadn't read about in any book.
Marrakech is no exception.

We wanted to dress in our "finest" and go out for a last hurah here
for dinner.
We stopped into a restuarant a stones throw down one of the dark
little alleys near our hotel and found Dar Essalam. We had what seemed
like and endless meal of Olives, Moroccaine salads and Kefta Tagine.
While we ate a trio played some traditional Moroccan music and a gal
danced around the room balancing a tray of lit candles on her head.
Later a belly dance came out to entertaine us.

Almost as a side note, this also the restaurant that James Stewart and
Dorris Day ate at in the Alfred Hitchcock classic "The Man Who Knew
Too Much"!

Enter the souks at 6:30 and there are 100k people squeezed in either
buying or selling. At 7:00pm the daily fast is over and within
minutes the place turns into a ghost town. 100 or so Europeans are
all that are left.

With the place empty, I was able to take a couple of random shots of
some the street vendors in the souks.

Moroccan cakes, more like cookies. The fig newtons are better than
anything Nabisco makes.

Ok, today we did get to rock the Kasbah a bit. Took a tour of the
remains of the Royal Palace. Upon it's completion in the 15th century,
was said to be one of the most magnificent palaces ever constructed.
Was only occupied for 100 years before being destroyed by another
conquering sultan.

What bikes are to Denmark, and scooters are to France, mopeds are to
Morocco. Since cars and motorcycles aren't allowed in the medina,
everyone flies around way too close to pedestrians on mopeds.

Here two of them have crashed into one another and the croud is
gathering to break up the two men.

Today we took a little tour of the New City, just west of the walled
in old medina. What a contrast! Quite modern and really florishing.
We took a walk through the public olive and argan gardens where they
have installed a dozen or so free Internet access stations throughout
the park.

Day 45: spices and street urchins

Today we wanted to relax a bit. We had petit dejourne in a cafe
overlooking the market place. Then we checked around for a more cost
effective place to stay. After wandering down a few back alleys and
stopping into a few riads, we found an only slightly less comfortable
place for 1/5th the price ($12 / night). Apparently being in the Lonely Planet guide
allows you to raise you rates.

Next we went for massages at spas called hammams. Mo went for the full
pull. Massage, savon noir scrub, bathing, the works. I just got the
massage. I had no idea how sore I was, I think sleeping on the ground
most of this trip has caught up with me.

After massages we tried to go Rock the Kasbah. Ok, 'Rock' might be an
overstatement. We tried to go walk the Kasbah where the royal palce is
located. On the way we bumped into a police officer directing traffic.
He told us that that part of town was closed after 3:00 during
Ramadan. So he just leaves his traffic duties to walk us about 5
minutes away into the Jewish Quarter to a spice vendor. Mo was excited
to go to see the spice vendor as it was one thing that shes been
looking forward to in Morocco. I was a little skeptical, not really
being in the market for paprika or saffron or any thing, but after
talking with the guy for 5 minutes, I was really glad we came in.
Really knowledgable guy, more like a pharmacist than a street vendor.
The had herbs and spices for every type of cooking and herbs and
spices for anything that ails you. Bronchitis, migraines,
aphrodisiacs, anything.

From the Jewish Quarter, we walked along the busy streets and
stumbled into a French hotel. Since it is a European hotel, we are
able to get a beer here unlike the restaurants in the Medina where
alcohol is strictly forbidden.

After a couple of pops, feeling really good about our day, we headed
back to the square where we had a slightly unpleasant expirience. Mo
was in the middle of making a good deal on some dried apricots, when
she was approached by yet another 14 year old girl offering henna
tattoo. Mo brushed her off but the girl was insistant. The girl
grabbed Mos hand and started drawing on it anyway dispite the protests
while saying "It's free. It's free" as if this was a free sample. The
girl finished the scribbles and Mo tried to tip the girl 10dh ($1) for
it but the girl was now demanding 250dh. Mo refused to pay and still
tried to give the girl the dollar and get away, but the girl was
making a scene now grabbing her arm and yelling "You pay me! You got
tattoo, now you pay me!". Took both of us to break her grip on Mo and
get away. Affraid that she would call someone or something, we called
it a night and headed back to our hotel. In the end, nothing came of
it, but put a bit of a damper on our day.

Day 44: Marrakech

Today was our first full day in Morocco. Made it to our hotel with relative ease. A 17 room riad that has an open courtyard in the center, with a large tiled fountain in the center. Best of all only a block from Jemaa El Fna, where the Night Market is set up and the center of all the activity.

We spent the morning getting a flavor for the souks, the open markets that line all the narrow streets selling scarfs, spices, fruit, leather, just about everything. There are fellas trying everything they can to get you to come into their stall. Some are funny, some are pleasant, some are tennacious, and some are aggressive and will just grab you and lead you in. We noticed something interesting though. Your immediate reaction is to say no to everything that is offered to you, afterall who really wants to talk to a salesman. Even if you really are interested in looking at something in the store, your gut reaction is to walk away.

Spent the afternoon the hotels rooftop deck looking over the city and a bit of mint tea.

After the sun goes down, this market place really comes alive. All the food vendors come out, as well as the snake charmers, trained monkeys, story tellers, and everyone done fasting for Ramadan. We wandered a bit looking for a good vendor for dinner. Passed on the goats head and settled for tamer selection of some delicious perch, sardines, calamari, fish croquets. Since they frown on all alcohol here we washed it down with a Fanta.

We were warned that Ramadan might be a bad time to come here since a lot of places would be closed. We have not found this to be the case
since Jemaa El Fna is open and accessible during the day and downright
buzzing with activity at night.

Tomorrow: might take in some of the historical sites

Getting from Andalucia Spain to Marrakesh Morroco

We had a difficult time finding on the internet the best way to get
from Andalucia Spain to Marrakesh Morroco. So, for those out there
that are considering such a trip, you may find this useful. If you are
not planning such a trip, you may find this extremely boring.

Starting at the Malaga Spain airport...

Portillo Bus line from Malaga airport to Marbella Spain bus terminal.
Note: There is a city bus that leaves often but takes twice as long to
get to Marbella. We waited a bit and took the direct bus.
(4.30€) (45 minutes) (11:15am)

Portillo Bus from Marbella Spain to Algeciras Spain. Note: We also
could have chosen to go to the bus station just outside Gibralta
called la Linea. But it's just as easy to catch a ferry from the city
across the harbor, Algeciras.
(6.71€) (1hour) (1:15pm)

Walk east down Calle San Bernardo from the Transporte Generales Comes,
Algeciras bus station towards the Puerto de Algeciras. Note: avoid
the guys telling you that you need buy your Ferry ticket from this
agent or that agent. They are paid by a travel agency. Just go right
to the ferry building to get your ticket. (0€) (10min) (3pm)

(5.00€. Found out later it should have been about 0.50€) (10
minutes) (7pm -2 hour timezone difference)

O.N.C.F. Train from Tangier to Marrakesh. Note: The train ticket
office did not take euros or credit card so get your dirham before you
get to the station if you can. Although there is an Atm at the
station, it was out of service when we got there.
Note 2: the overnight train was absolutely the way to go. Although the
train was at least 40 years old, it was clean and extremely
comfotable. We were rocked to sleep almost as soon as the train
started moving.

take you to the Medina. First offer was 50 dh, but shopped around a

After taking a car, two buses, a ferry, and a taxi, we are finally on
the midnight express. Actually, it's called the Marrakesh Express from
Tangiers and is a 40 year old sleeper train.

From everything we've read about Tangiers is a virtual cesspool that
you should plan on leaving as soon as you can. We have not found that to be the case. The locals are friendly and helpful. Yes the taxi
drivers that tried to get us in their cab as we exited the ferry
building were pushy, but when are taxi drivers not pushy. We dismissed
these fellas and found our own taxi, who incidentally we cound out over charged us by quite a bit but it still only cost us $10. That
being said, we did not go into the Medina where I'm sure we would be
dimissing false guides every few minutes.

Since we are in an Islamic city during during the holy month of
Ramadan, everyone is home fasting before 7pm. Apparently after 7, the
fast is broken and the city comes to life.

We got to hear one of the most amazing things we will probably never
get a chance to hear again. As we got arrived, broadcast over
loudspeakers from all the mosques was a distinct Arabic singing to announce the end of fasting and a call to prayer. It echoed across
the whole city and was absolutely incredible.

So, made it to the train station and hopped the first overnight to
Marrakesh.

We left Granada after two days of wandering through old cobbled
streets and ducking into shops. We headed south again out of the
Sierra Nevada region to the Costa del Sol. We stumbled upon a
fantastic little town high up in the mountains near Malaga called
Mijas. All the streets are cobbled single lane and all the houses cut
into the hills are bright white stone.

While here we had an experience you can't get in many parts of the
world. A bullfight. The 110 year old Plaza del Torro is set at the
highest point in the city and seats less than 1000 people.

I won't be able to accurately or effectively decribe the actual
bullfight itself. A bit of an emotional rollercoaster. It's an
artform that has been around for centuries and is steeped in tradition
and respect for the bulls. And yet, three bulls are stabbed to death
right before your eyes. Ask me when we see you next and i'll be able
to describe it in better detail in person.

Another round of where in the world are Mo and Jon.

We headed into the Sierra Nevada mountains today, the highest peaks in Spain. You could just see a bit of snow on the top of a couple of them, which was surprising to see from the desert we were driving through. We arrived in an accient town known for it´s cave dwellings where the first settlers in the area, primitive man, cut caves into the sides of the red clay hills surrounding the valley thousands of years ago. Moorish and Christian settlers expanded the caves centuries ago and turned them into permenant houses. We went to take a look at the caves and were invited by a random woman to take a look inside her cave home. She told us it was carved out by hand over 500 years ago. Today all of the caves have the walls and ceilings covered in a white wash creating a smooth, clean surface. From the valey floor you can just see white spots on the sides of the surrounding hills with small white chimnies poking out. Despite the desert outside, inside the cave houses are a constant 20 degrees.

Finally tore ourselves away from Mazarron. Really was hard to go. Could have spent the rest of the trip drinking cafe con leche on the
beach there, but we kinda feel like we gotta keep heading south.

Short drive through the arid Spanish country side. We know we are getting south because we saw our first Arabic signs on the highway. We made it to another beach community called Aguadolce. They say that the national park just north of us here is the hottest and driest place in Europe and since the car thermometer read 42 today, I'm not going to argue. The waves are little rougher here than in Mazarron but the wind is still warm and gentle and the sangria is still sweet.

Just set up our tent, took a long walk on the beach and took in a bit of the small town.

Again. Did absolutely nothing today. So much so that I don't even have a pic to upload. So, I guess Mo will have to blurb about the food and drink instead...

The sangria is rica, the tapas so good, the paella to die for and las churros actually really did almost kill us. Tortillas are really omletes and oh so yummy. The beer is delicious and hits the spot on hot sunny beachy afternoons. Cafe con leche on the beach is the perfect way to start the day! And a stop at the heladeria for gelato a perfect way to end. The food alone is reason enough to come to Spain!

From Valencia, we continued south again along the coast. We found the
most beautiful little cove that wasn't in any of our travel books
called Puerto de Mazarron. The campground we stumbled onto is right
across the street from the beach. We we went for a walk on the beach
at sunset and found that the only other person there for 1/2 a mile in
either direction was the gal running the beachside bar. Dos cervezas,
por favor.

Day 35: the holy grail

We Found It!!

Someone shoulda told Indiana Jones, the Grail was right here in
Valencia the whole time.

So we got into Valencia last night and since neither of have been
feeling real well lately, we opted for a hotel again. We looked up a
cheap place, but it turned out to be dead in the center of the old
Roman part of the city. Really great architecture dating back
centuries everywhere. Even a bull fighting arena at the end of our
block. Of course now it's a happening hot spot. So we did up the town
a bit. Got too much paella and a too many pitchers if sangria. So
worth it though. Best sangria I've ever had.

Today, we started our quest for the Grail. Where so many before us
have fail, we succeeded!! After pouring through the ancienct texts
and maps (i.e. The Lonely Planet guide) we deduced the most likely
location for the final resting place of the Grail. It was marked
"Cuppa de Christo" on the map, so it wasn't really that hard. We
followed the crowds down to the Santa Maria church (just between
Starbucks and McDonalds) we found the Grail. Ok, so we couldn't
actually see it, but we found the church, and since it is Sunday, we
found a lot of believers here too. I guess we just have to have faith
that it was in there.

We left Cabrils late and headed south again. Took what we thought was
a small detour to check our the river delta. Turned out to be an
amzing find. When we got to the end of the river we found an empty
beach that stretched for miles in both directions surrounded by acres
and acres of shallow farm land with thousands and thousands of birds
nesting. Really an amazing stumble

From there we headed south again to a town that is the birthplace of
paella and also the home of The Holy Grail. Thea right, THE Grail.

So, with a bit of sadness we left Andorra. Such a scenic country, or
principality, depending on which book you read. We have come back here.

We crossed the border heading south on the only road that exits
Andorra to the south. In Spain we first stopped in the provicial
capital of Catalunya, Lleida. While there we toured the Seu Vella, the
ruins of a 12th century Catedral that sits high above the town.

From Lleida we headed towards the coast where found a luxury
campground a stones from the beach in a small town called Cabrils.

Hopefully tomorrow we'll have the breakdown of the wine and local
cusine.

Things I learned about France

For French drivers, "safe breaking distance" is measured in inches.

Bread with every meal is unavoidable.

What bicycles are in Denmark, scooters are in France. Everyone has
one. One diffence was that they pass on the right and left in traffic
on single lane roads. They buzz like gnats around the car.

Paris really might be the most romantic city.

It is possible to live on wine and cheese alone.

Every small town and big city has an abbey or a church or citadell or
castle or cathedral with an amzaing history dating back to the 12th
century.

Cote d'Azure is both as beautiful and as expensive as they say it is.

Mediterranean really is as blue as it is in photos, and yet no photo
does it justice.

The terrain is as varied as it is in California. One minute you are
driving through a lush green valley, then you go over a little mountin
pass and it's dusty and dry. Go over another pass and you see marshes
and smell the sea air.

There is something in the south of France, as yet to be determined,
that does not agree with, nay, is diamtrically opposed to Mo's
constitution.

"Salut" is how we toasted in France.

Things I learned about Germany

Not much. We were only in Germany for two days and we were staying
with friends whose traditions hail from Holland and Turkey.

What I did learn was that Hamburg is a bustling metropolis.

Super Dickman's Chocolate Kisses (marshmellow surrounded by chocolate)
have another far, far less politically correct name. Nonetheless,
taste delicious in a breakfast sandwich.

Do not engage in drinking contests here. You will lose.

Day 32: l'engolasters

After deciding to stay another day in Andorra, we decided to spend
that time on a hike through the mountains. We visited the tourists
office in the town of Canillo and the woman there gave us some ideas
on a hike we should do. We packed a few supplies, found the trailhead
near the center of a town called Encamp, and headed out.

Our hike peaked at a lake that serves water to the towns below, Lake
Engolasters. Gorgeous views of the entire valley We spent the day
napping, picnicing and reading on the shores.

First let me say that the road to Andorra is like nothing I've ever
driven. As crooked as I could imagine, single lane, and with sheer
cliffs over the edge for most of it. White knucked, we made it to the
top of the Pyranees!

We haven't much time to explore yet, but the views are so incredible,
I think we may stay an extra day and do some hiking.

Day 31: leaving France

Driving over the Pyranees, came across another no-cars-allowed
villages called Villefranche. You park on one side if the river and
walk over where the drawbridge used to be. The entire town is guarded
by high walls and ramparts. We just strolled the streets for a
while, watched a potter throw some pottery, grabbed some lunch.

Day 30: Lazy

Pretty lazy day today. Lounged on the beach for a while and then just
started driving. Road tripping without any real destination. We drove
south along the coast until we just felt like stopping. After 5 nights
sleeping on the ground, and both of us slightly under the weather, we
found a a roadside motel somewhere in the Muscat region. If either of
were feeling better, we'd be sampling some of the wine.

I think the updates from here out will likely be more tame. We are
done with the real tourist site seeing stuff and are slowing down. The
plan is that we are going to spend more time on the beach and less
time in the car.

Day 29: Saint Cyr s/ mer

Got up early this morning. So early that I walked down from our
campsite to the beach and watched the sun rise over Saint Marie sur Mer.

After a bit of breakfast we made the relatively short drive from Saint
Marie to Saint Cyr and Cassis. A pair of beautiful little beach towns.

Geographical trivia for the day: in our travels today we drove
through the oldest town in France, first settled 2600 years ago.
While there we took pictures of an island on which stands the chateau
where Alexandre Dumas imprisoned the Count of Monte Cristo.

Day 28: The Sea

And then at the end of the we finally reached the Mediterranean Sea.
We found a fantastic campground in Saint Marie sur la Mer that is
nestled where the Rhone river meets the sea.

We decided to go for a swim in the ocean so we walked down to the
beach. We were surprised to find that it was a topless beach. I'm not
saying who, but one of us laid in the sun topless like the locals for
the afternoon.

The we got some dinner and another bottle of wine, spread out a
blanket in the most perfect spot on the beach and watched the sun go
down.

Day 28: le Baux

The we headed south towards a village called Le Baux. Guarded by a
10th century citadel, this town doesn't allow any cars. So you have to
park outside of town and walk in. Tiny cobble stone streets create a
maze lined with little shops that lead up to the castle. Really glad
weren't too lazy to make the walk.

Round 2 of where are Mo and Jon

Took a walk in a fantastic, classic looking little French village
today. The town has created "the Walk of Van Gough", recreating a
number of his works along a marked path. This is the town in which he
painted over 100 masterpieces while he was in the alsylum.

It also happens to be the birthplace of Nostrodamus.

Just a really majestic looking chateau just outside Manet called
Chateau de Rocher. It was used as a stronghold for both the French and
English during the hundred years war and sits just on the edge of the
Bouchon de Rhone.

After we left Versaille, we headed southwest towards Loire Valley.
We made it as far as Blois for dinner. It was getting dark so we
starting looking for a place to stay. Found a great campsite in Onzain.

Had a real easy day today. No real tourist sites. Today just we woke
eay and made great drive through Loire Valley along the river stopping
at a few beautiful chateaus along the way.

This evening we found our next campsite on the shores of beautiful
lake in Saint Eloy Les Mines.

Day 24: Louvre

Back by popular demand... Mo! (You'll have to excuse me I'm not at my best, I've been gone for a month, I've been drunk since I've left).. (for any Canadians that understand the referance... ) We left the left 1 month ago today!

So, I'm really not good at the blogging thing but here is a pic of Jon and I at the Louvre in front of my final art history exam (which I aced)! 1 point for anyone who can anyone identify that painting. 2 points if you can interpret its significance.

Spent the morning at la Louvre and although we could have spent the rest of the week there, our feet and backs gave out and we opted for a long drawn out cheese and wine afternoon on a patio. The rest if the day followed with a similar hectic schedual of sitting in a park (Jardine de Luxemburg), eating gelato and wandering through streets around the Latin Quarter (we did see the Pantheon through our wanders).

Got back to the hotel and upgraded our room to one with a balcony so we opened up another bottle of wine and enjoyed the evening. We did manage to have another drink at another patio this evening before finishing another bottle of wine on the balcony looking over Montmartre while we tried to look into what to do with ourselves for the next month. Jon managed to rent a car for a good price for the next 2.5 weeks, so off we go tomorrow!

Day 25: hall of mirrors

This is The Hall of Mirrors, upstairs overlooking some of the gardens
at Versaille. They signed some peace treaty after WWI in this room.
Can't remember the name of it ;)

We could go on for days on how beautiful the fountains and the mazes
of gardens were. The scope of this place is Incredible.

One really interesting display was in the Hall of Peace. The walls
were covered with paintings showing the effects of war during the
reign of Louis the IV. Below each painting was a photo of a more
recent event from the last century demonstrating how each scene
depicted on the walls has been repeated in other wars throughout
history. For example, a huge painting showed a woman begging for the
life of her husband to Napolean and under neath would be a photo
depicting something similar from WW II, or a giant painting of
soldiers invading by sea during battle, and below a photo from the
shores of the battle of Normandy. Very interesting and masterfully
done. Truly thought provoking.

Jon at Arc de Triomphe

Kind of an interesting day to be at the Arc. Today is the anniversary of the liberation of Paris by the Allied forces during WWII. There were a bunch of WWII vets laying wreaths next to the eternal flame at the tomb of the unknown soldier underneath the Arc.
